Graphology, like projective techniques with which it has much in common, is validated above all by correlation. A total of 150 theses are exhibited in this revisory work, many of which deal with interdisciplinary material where particularities and characteristics are correlated with personality elements or factors, framed within a doctoral thesis, which is a work of scientific research and thus follows all the required guarantees with regards methodology.

The result is a homologous body of work which produces meta-analysis guidelines that confirm the validity of each of the research projects, and confers overall validation upon the whole graphological system.

"The Book of Kells (Trinity College Dublin MS 58) is celebrated for its lavish decoration. The manuscript contains the four Gospels in Latin based on a Vulgate text, written on vellum (prepared calfskin), in a bold and expert version of the script known as "insular majuscule". The place of origin of the Book of Kells is generally attributed to the scriptorium of the monastery founded around 561 by St Colum Cille on Iona, an island off the west coast of Scotland. In 806, following a Viking raid on the island which left 68 of the community dead, the Columban monks took refuge in a new monastery at Kells, County Meath. It must have been close to the year 800 that the Book of Kells was written, although there is no way of knowing if the book was produced wholly at Iona or at Kells, or partially at each location. It has been on display in the Old Library at Trinity College Dublin from the mid 19th century, and attracts over 500,000 visitors a year. Since 1953 it has been bound in four volumes. Two volumes are on public view, one opened to display a major decorated page, and one to show two pages of script. The volumes are changed at regular intervals." Trinity College Dublin

UAB ranks among the top 200 universities in the world

08.09.2010 Studying - UAB has moved up 38 positions in the QS World University Ranking 2010 and finds itself for the first time among the top 200 universities of the world. Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona occupies position 173 in this year's ranking. It also ranks among the top 100 universities in the areas of arts and humanities (95), natural sciences (71) and social sciences (85). With regard to life sciences and medicine, UAB has moved up 27 positions. In the ranking of European universities, UAB is listed at 75, seventeen points higher than last year's ranking. The number of Spanish universities listed among the top 500 of the world also improves from eight to ten. UB and UAB are the only two to figure among the top 200 universities.

These positions are the result of its internationally contrasted prestige and the quality of its academics and researchers.

This is the seventh edition of the QS World University Ranking. This year's ranking is headed by UK's Cambridge University, the first time a non-American university reaches number one; until now Harvard University had always occupied first place.

15,000 questionnaires

QS compiles its ranking by using Scopus sources, the largest academic publications database in the world. However, in contrast to other rankings based on statistical indicators of research, QS World University Ranking also works with surveys. The latest edition was compiled with the help of 15,000 questionnaires sent out to academics throughout the world.

The survey represented 40% of the general qualification for each university. Scopus databases of the number of citations per academic were weighted 20%. The internationalisation of each university were evaluated based on the percentage of foreign faculty members (5%) and foreign students (5%). Teaching quality was rated according to the number of students per lecturer. The remaining 10% was based on surveys regarding graduates and their entry into the labour market.

Until 2009, QS (Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd) had been in charge of carrying out rankings for The Times. Starting this year each company has decided to create its own independent ranking.

US and UK hegemony

Third and fourth place in the ranking are occupied by Yale University, USA, and University College London, UK. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has moved up from ninth to fifth place this year.

The list of top 10 universities is completed with Oxford University, Imperial College London, University of Chicago, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Princeton University.

2010 1st Year of European Graphologists – 10th Year of Graphopsychologists - 15th Year of Handwriting Analysts – 75th Anniversary of Graphology in Spanish Universities.

On behalf of the Management Team, we would like to congratulate everyone in this extraordinary 2010, which we begin with the first Year of the Masters in European Graphoanalysis. On completion of their research projects, graduates will be conferred as the first European Graphoanalysts, as their ECTS credits are recognised in the twenty-seven European Union countries. The Autonomous University of Barcelona (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona – UAB) is the first European university to achieve this considerable status.

Just a few hours ago we said farewell to 2009 as the Year of Tribute to Prof. Augusto Vels, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Spanish Association of Consultant Graphologists (Agrupación de Grafoanalistas Consultivos de España – AGC), culminating in the publication of a special monographic yearbook that came out for the Christmas holidays: Lecciones Magistrales de Augusto Vels, which includes a series of testimonials, some of which unfortunately could not be published because the book had already gone to print, but which will nonetheless be collected together in a complete digital format available to the public on the ICG website.

The Year of Vels 2009 reached its pinnacle with the academic events carried out in the Autonomous University of Barcelona in the month of October in the presence of the Professor's children and grandchildren, who were given a commemorative plaque, and with the participation of Prof. Josep Llobet, Representative Director of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office; Prof. Francisco Viñals and Prof. Mariluz Puente, the Directors of Graphology Studies at the UAB; Prof. Dolors Mora, Prof. Lynn Perez-Calvo Soler and Prof. Pilar Mèlich, representatives of the AGC’s Board of Directors and Professors of Graphology at the UAB; Prof. Helena Soler García de Soria, representative of the Founding Board; Prof. Jordi Morera, representative of the AGC in the Museo Augusto Vels; Prof. Joan Maria Ferran Aymar and Prof. Josep Capdevila, representatives of the Technical Council; Prof. Dor Alfred Gauthier, representative of the Teachers’ Honours Board; as well as Prof. Santiago Estaún, the Head of the Psychology Department, together with recent UAB graduates.

During the celebration, the importance of Prof. Augusto Vels's grapho-analytical system was highlighted as an exponent of the Spanish School of Graphology, complemented by Viñals & Puente's Transactional Graphoanalysis. Both systems have been validated by doctoral theses in Spanish universities and constitute one of the main reasons for the growing success of Spanish Graphology internationally. By way of an anecdote it is worth remembering that important multinational companies — not only American and Spanish, but also French and German — have for years placed their trust in graphoanalysts with degrees from the UAB, and its first representative, Prof. Francisco Viñals, received the Cruz de Primera Clase (First Class Cross), awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Defence for his work as professor and graphoanalyst in the Army General Staff. He and Prof. Mariluz Puente are the authors of the current principal university bibliography on graphology and, in addition, as Directors of the Institute of Graphological Sciences (Instituto de Ciencias del Grafismo – ICG) they have been selected once again as “Personatges de Catalunya” (Important Catalans) and included in the current volume of Historia Contemporànea de Catalunya.

We have certainly had good reason for celebration in recent times: from the Presidency of the ADEG, to the Congress of Directors of Graphological Entities of Barcelona-2008 in the UAB, to the aforementioned Year 2009 in Honour of Prof. Augusto Vels. In this newly begun 2010, by an extraordinary coincidence, we are simultaneously celebrating the Tenth Anniversary of Graphopsychologists of the UAB, the Fifteenth Anniversary of UAB Handwriting Analysts and the 75th Anniversary of University Graphology in Spain, which began with classes given by Dr Werner Wolff, in collaboration with Dr Emilio Mira y López, who was also one of the internationally renowned architects of scientific graphology.

Indeed Prof. Werner Wolff taught Graphology in 1935 at the Institut Psicotècnic de la Generalitat and also in what was then called the “Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona” (formerly the UB and now the UAB which, on being founded, recovered that name by agreement of the Vice-Chancellors and the Autonomous Government of Catalonia). Mira y Lopez, the Honourable Head of Department, stated that Wolff possessed impressive psychoanalytical, gestalt-expressive and ethnopsychological training, in addition to very considerable graphological knowledge, derived from Klages, amongst others. During the Second Spanish Republic, Dr Mira y López echoed the innovations in German graphology and psychology, contributing to the support of graphology by the Academia Médica (Medical Academy) and its development in Spanish universities, first in what was then called the “Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona” as the first Head of Department of Psychiatry in Spain (1933) and Wolff's mentor. At a later stage, the graphologist also worked at the Complutense University (Universidad Complutense). Prof. Francisco Viñals also worked at the Complutense, as Director–Technician at its local section in Córdoba, and has worked in the current Autonomous University of Barcelona for 15 years. Also worth noting are the occasional courses which have been developed in other universities, such as the Ramon Llull University (Universitat Ramon Llull) and the University of Barcelona, where Prof. Esperanza Fonta, with the help of Prof. Francisco Viñals, organised some Graphology courses and workshops.

However, Graphology is not a qualification in itself, but rather is included as a subject or discipline in current degree courses related to criminology and security. A field which had been dealt with practically in secret as an elite instrument of the Defence General Staff, is now being used in research units within the police and the majority of HR offices, to the extent that graphopsychological reports are increasingly being used in legal proceedings.

We can state with great satisfaction that Graphology is one of the most successful subjects and one which attracts great interest at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and at entities which come under the auspices of the Institute of Graphological Sciences. For this reason we now urge our colleagues who have graduated from UAB to join in this celebration of 75 years of University Graphology in Spain. This places us at the forefront in Europe with UAB's first Masters with ECTS (European Credit Transfer System), which are internationally recognised in the 27 European Union countries.

We started 2010 with an interesting coincidence, the 10th Anniversary of “Graphologists” and the 15th Anniversary of “ Experts Handwriting Analysis”, both academic qualifications by the Autonomous University of Barcelona, in the 75th Anniversary of the Graphology at the University in Spain, with the Graphology Course given by the Dr. Werner Wolff, collaborator of the Dr. Emilio Mira y Lopez in Barcelona.

Indeed, the Prof. Werner Wolff taught Graphology in 1935 at the Institut Psicotècnic of the Catalonia's Autonomous Government (Generalitat de Catalunya), and at the "Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona" (old denomination UB, and current UAB, who in the foundation recovered the name by agreement of the Rectors and the Generalitat de Catalunya)

According The Dr. Emilio Mira y López, the Prof. Werner Wolff had an important training on psychoanalysis, gestalt -expressive, etnopsychology, and a very substantial knowledge on graphology derived from Klages and others.

Leticia Perinat -assistant lecturer at the Autonomous University of Barcelona- has obtained the DEA* (Diploma of Advanced Studies) and the Proficiency of the Researcher (Suficiencia Investigadora), with a work on Graphopsychology inside the Doctorate’s studies in Psychology.

* DEA is a part of the Phd programme in European countries; usually it’s a summarized dissertation from the doctoral dissertation to obtain the Phd.

The study was done on a sample of 54 people and the NEO-PI-R as criterion. It's proved - statistically significant - the relevancy of the graphological triad - pressure, angle and direction - in the prediction of the labour performance.

Welcome to Barcelona, and welcome to this meeting which we are holding today in the “Casa de Convalescència” of the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, one of the finest examples of Catalan modernist architecture. We shall now read the reports of the AGC of Spain.

Report by the Secretariat of the AGC of Spain

This year, the AGC of Spain took part in a legal matter of great importance for forensic graphology. Two professors from the AGC (president Francisco Viñals and chairman Jordi Vives) were assigned by the private prosecution and the office of the public prosecutor to participate as expert graphoanalysts in an important trial held in the Catalan court: the woman on trial had been accused of murdering the psychologist Anna Permanyer. The graphological report presented by the AGC professors was decisive in proving that the signature appearing on a contract that benefited the accused had been obtained under duress, evidenced by alterations seen when compared with the temperament and character type observed chronologically in other documents undeniably written by the murdered psychologist. Vels’s Graphoanalysis and Viñals & Puente’s Transactional Graphoanalysis were accepted as valid evidence since they are taught in university programmes and have been proven by two doctoral theses. The presiding judge and the jury included paragraphs from the graphological report in their findings, validating the conclusions of said report and finding the accused guilty of directly or indirectly applying violence to the victim, coercing her to sign the document and then murdering her.

Another activity carried out by the AGC was the First Seminar on Signatures and Personality, organised in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Graphology, during which professors Francisco Viñals and Mariluz Puente were named honorary members.

Professor Mariluz Puente obtained various videos of Augusto Vels at the University of Murcia and in the city council of his home town, Puerto Lumbreras (Murcia) from 1996, in which he is named one of the town’s honorary citizens. Moreover, a museum was dedicated to him and a street named after him, where his bust was erected. These videos can be seen on the AGC’s website: http://www.grafoanalisis.com/. Prof. Jordi Morera has also represented the AGC in various seminars given in Alicante and in the Augusto Vels Museum in Puerto Lumbreras (Murcia).

Before the summer, AGC of Spain met with the president and members of the ASINGRA Board of Directors, a graphologist association from La Rioja and after examining their petition and ascertaining the excellent level of the applicants, the AGC decided to support the association, which is now a AGC of Spain member.

This year, the annual journal, due out in December, is dedicated to Graphopathology.

The AGC has also collaborated with the Institute of Graphological Sciences (ICG) in training sessions and seminars, thanks to scholarships awarded by the ICG to individuals from South America to pursue their studies. The AGC also helped in disseminating information to various entities, urging them to withdraw—or at least not to impose the use of—graphics tablets (or “pen pads”) for capturing and processing hand-written signatures, due to the fact that these graphics tablets are illegal (as already pointed out in 2002 in a widely-read article written by Francisco Viñals, “Peligros de la firma informatizada”, which appeared in http://www.grafologiauniversitaria.com/). Undoubtedly, graphological organisations should do something about this (as Mrs. Nezzos suggested some time ago) because, as we already pointed out in the ICG-AGC, there are no guarantees regarding the use of these latent signatures: since they occur independently of the document with which they should be attached, they can be used on other documents and in ways not in keeping with the wishes of their author. Here in Spain, for now at least, those shops that use graphics tablets for accepting payment by credit card have agreed to offer paper receipts as an alternative for those customers who do not wish to sign on them. Thanks to our information campaigns, more and more people are refusing to sign on these pen pads due to fear of improper use of their signatures.

Aside from what has already been mentioned, the AGC of Spain continues to endeavour in its ethics-oriented goal of watching over and protecting professional graphology, so that it will be given the social recognition that it deserves.

The AGC of Spain collaborates in the start-up of the European Master’s Programme in Graphoanalysis

Various professors who are members of the AGC of Spain, together with the Institute of Graphological Sciences, continue to contribute to the vigour of graphological studies in academia. For two years there has been a master's programme on offer at the UAB—last year, for example, the AGC participated in a homage to Hergé; now, the AGC is assisting in setting up the European Master’s Programme in Graphoanalysis. Starting from the academic year 2008-2009, studies in graphology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, a public university, will conform to the Bologna agreement and will now offer ECTS credits, thus complying with the new European university-studies framework. This professional master’s programme is made up of three postgraduate degrees, all consisting of 750 hours and offering 30 credits: 1) Psychological Analysis of Handwriting, Graphoanalysis, Graphopathology and Graphic Projective Tests; 2) Graphopsychology in Domestic and Professional Settings; and 3) Forensic Handwriting Analysis, Graphistics, Document Examination and Forensic Sociolinguistics. The heads of the programme are Francisco Viñals Carrera, Mariluz Puente Balsells and Jose Llobet Aguado. The courses will be taught by an outstanding team of academics and professionals, including experts from Spanish public-security forces and from medical and educational institutions. Professors from the AGC of Spain, such as Manuel J. Moreno, Dolors Mora and Lynn Pérez-Calvo, will also participate, as will professors from other associations belonging to the ADEG. Moreover, the courses incorporate reading materials from various European schools.

Interest in graphology is constantly increasing in Spanish universities, and in fact, UAB students come not only from all over Spain, but also from the European Union and America.

In Spain, graphology is also taught as part of Criminology programme: specifically, professors Francisco Viñals Carrera and Mariluz Puente Balsells teach graphology within the programme on scientific techniques applied to criminal investigation at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona School for Prevention and Integral Safety and Security.

The ADEG contributes to European legislation on business and consumer protection thanks to ethical guidelines, such as the signing of the AGC of Spain's “Manifesto Against Pseudo-Graphologies” *

In 2005 the European government published a new regulation on consumer protection called the “Unfair Commercial Practices Directive” (Directive 2005/29/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 May 2005 concerning unfair business-to-consumer commercial practices in the internal market). This directive (published in the Official Journal of the European Union: L 149/22 of 11 May 2005, p. 0022 – 0039) modifies all previous ones, and every country within the community must adopt the resolution in keeping with their own internal regulations.

While slowly being put into place in various countries within the European Community, this directive endeavours to do away with unfair and aggressive business practices. Another objective is to reduce potential fraud regarding ineffective products and services or those with unproven results: in England, at least, this is understood to include astrologists, fortune-tellers, healers and related professions. All those who work in these professions must warn potential consumers that their services have not been scientifically proven and are meant for entertainment purposes only: this warning must appear on websites, receipts, printed material and on all other documents relating to said activity. Failure to comply can result in prosecution.

This regulation on consumer protection puts special emphasis on people in vulnerable situations, such as children, the sick and the elderly. One example of this type of abuse would be announcing products or services that heal illness via some kind of therapy (as “Rational Graphology" claims to do). *

The use of false customer endorsements on web pages is also sanctioned. Internet is an excellent tool for instant communication, but the European parliament is aware that the anonymous nature of internet allows for deception, and that false identities abound in advertisements and in users’ comments on forums and in other places, for which reason these regulations and sanctions are being adopted.
It is greatly appreciated if professional organisations put their own ethical codes of conduct into place, as this helps public authorities in enforcing surveillance and regulations. In keeping with this, last year the ADEG fulfilled its obligation by deciding to sign the “Manifesto Against Pseudo-Graphologies (Rational Graphology, Idengraphy and Others)” *, as proposed by the AGC of Spain (the signed version had been modified by Mrs V. de Villeneuve, president of the SFDG of Paris).

Another activity forbidden for astrologists and fortune-tellers is the use of standardised templates: legislation now requires individuals and organisations to submit personalised reports. As far as graphology is concerned, the legislation does not prohibit the use of computers for graphometry or for calculating parameters that have been previously assessed and scored by a graphologist: it only forbids the use of reports consisting of standardised paragraphs which have been pieced together. The correct procedure (which is precisely what we graphoanalysts do when using either the Vels or the Viñals & Puente systems) is to score the more than 200 graphic parameters within their aspects and sub-aspects, evaluating the graphic dominants and sub-dominants and obtaining the percentile of temperament and character combinations with or without the aid of a computer programme. Then, a report is drafted based on the results of the dominants as modified by the sub-dominants, the loops and the type-gestures, taking into account the influence of temperament and character percentiles. All this is done to fine tune and guarantee the research being done, and to assure that the analysis and synthesis carried out by the professional is original and formulated in such a way that facilitates comprehension in keeping with the style of report needed – be it for a general personality study, a criminological report, graphopathology, pedagogical purposes, informal use or a human resources evaluation.

The Office of Commerce can fine offenders by up to £5,000, and if brought to trial the punishment can be up to two years in prison.
On 23 May 2008, the Times explained the English interpretation of this new Unfair Commercial Practices Directive that would go into effect on 26 May 2008, emphasising that astrologists, healers, fortune-tellers, futurologists and other similar professionals are required to state in all advertisements, documentation and reports that their activity has no basis in science and is meant merely for entertainment. The newspaper also brought up the question of whether this regulation also applies to graphologists, since there are those who would put them into the same category.

Lastly, we would like to congratulate the members of the ADEG for having signed the “Manifesto Against Pseudo-Graphologies” and for the ethical guidelines to which they ascribe as a way of combating fraud, such as that of false universities. An example is the so-called International University of New Medicine of Milan, which was fined €12,000 and is now forbidden to call itself a university. This “university” had been promoted in Spain by Mr. R.C., for which he was reproached by the AGC. The AGC similarly reproached Mr. F.R., the man who is continuing the legacy of the self-proclaimed guru J. de las H., for promoting his “Rational Graphology” as a way to cure all illnesses. The same has been done in the case of others that support healers and fortune-tellers, such as Mrs. R.T., the author of the book Quiromancia. The AGC has gone to extreme efforts to comply in full by its own ethical code of conduct and to provide an example of best practices in Spain and in other countries. It has been a long and arduous struggle: nevertheless, the AGC of Spain, the Institute of Graphological Studies and the UAB’s European Master's Programme in Graphoanalysis are collaborating to assuage the attacks being carried out by sceptics, whose job is made all the easier by pseudo-graphologists.

Our objective within the AGC of Spain is to work together with the Institute of Graphological Sciences, the Spanish Society of Graphology as well as with other laudable graphological organisations in order to continue with the engaged struggle for high standards of ethics within the graphological profession in the European Union.

Abstract
“An avatar represents a person and functions as that person’s virtual body within a virtual space. Just as a person can use gesture and other bodily movements to communicate nonverbally in the real world, so too can a person use their avatar to communicate nonverbally in the virtual world. The most natural way to control avatar gesture would be to have the avatar mimic the movements and expressions of the user’s real body. However, non-immersive applications that run on desktop (or even palmtop) computers will require a spatially compact as well as natural and expressive means to control avatar gesture. Expressiveness requires not only the ability to invoke a gesture at will, but also the ability to control the continuous qualities of gesture such as its spatial and temporal extent.
This dissertation describes an interaction technique in which pen gesture controls avatar gesture. The user is supplied with a predefined set of avatar gestures, and each gesture is indexed by a letter of the alphabet. Writing a letter invokes that gesture on the avatar. In addition, style features are extracted from this handwritten letter, and those features are used to modulate expressive characteristics of the avatar’s gestural motion. This technique allows avatar gesture to be expressive not only through the variety of gestures, but also through the variations in the gesture’s dynamic performance.
An implementation of this technique is also described. The architecture allows a controllable avatar to be used in multi-user virtual worlds without modification to the software infrastructure of the virtual world itself.”

ADEG the European Deontological Association of Graphologists, was founded in 1990 in order to unite the European Graphological Associations in applying graphology on a higher scientific and quality level as well as respecting the Code of Deontology:

- The object of this European Code of Graphology is to define the rights andduties of graphologists wishing to exercise their profession in accordancewith common professional ethics.

- Graphology, a human science and a technique of observation andinterpretation, enables the personality to be studied through the examinationof handwriting.

- The graphologist is expected to maintain and develop his specialised skills

- The graphologist studies the personality of the writer. He works exclusivelyon authentic handwritten documents. He carries out his work of analysis andsynthesis in response to a request of a professional or private nature.

- The graphologist shall undertake to use only methods relating to his practice,and to work within limits of his knowledge and experience.

- The graphologist shall abstain from issuing diagnoses in fields reserved to themedical profession.

- Any graphologist signatory to this Code shall not display his graphologyqualifications on professional documents if these are associated with anactivity concerned with the occult or divination. He shall abstain frompublishing or advertising in periodicals related to the above activities.

- The work undertaken by the graphologist concerning the human personimposes the respect of moral and professional values. The graphologist mustsafeguard, at all times, his independence, integrity and sense of humanity. Hemust not be influenced by any prejudice in respect of sex, race, politics, socialclass or religion.

- In every analysis, the graphologist shall remain tactful and discreet. In workconcerned with the selection of personnel, he shall avoid touching upon theaspects of the writer's personality which are not related to the criteria of theposition to be filled. His language must remain clear, prudent andunambiguous. In his work, he must be completely impartial and refuse toprovide any analysis of 'accommodation'.

- The graphologist shall undertake not to use the documents or the informationin his possession for the purpose of causing harm to others. Being the solejudge of the worth of the documents submitted to him, he shall be able torefuse to provide an analysis without having to give any reason for doing so.He shall refuse to express an opinion on a document he knows to have beenstolen. He shall refuse to work on documents transmitted by fax orphotocopied, because these processes alter the quality of the handwritingtrait.

- The graphologist shall respect the laws of his country regarding the humanperson and, in particular professional secrecy, which must be respectedverbally as well as in the circulation of documents.

- The legitimate owner of a document shall be the sole person responsible forthe subsequent use of the analysis. The results shall be exclusively sent to theperson who made the request.

- The graphologist shall not divulge the name of his clients without their priorconsent. He shall not communicate or publish texts, or analyses thereof,without the agreement of the interested party or the owner of the document.In education, teachers shall respect the anonymity of the writers ofdocuments used.

- Each association or grouping of graphologists, having signed this Code ofEthics, shall undertake to ensure that it is respected and applied by all theirqualified members. Offences shall be dealt with by the disciplinary board ofeach association or grouping of the co-signatory countries.

GRAPHOLOGICAL MANIFESTO AGAINST PSEUDO-GRAPHOLOGIES
(GRAFOLOGÍA RACIONAL (RATIONAL GRAPHOLOGY) *, IDENGRAFÍA (IDENGRAPHY) * and OTHERS) *

This MANIFESTO, drawn up to express the thoughts and feelings of the undersigned graphological institutions, aims to inform the international community made up of scholars and students of graphology of certain thoughts and criteria that will be explained in the following sections:

- Graphological sciences have been based for decades on observation and studies that point out relations and allow for inferences to be made about psychological aspects, character and identity. These relations, as far as we currently know, basically constitute correlations and not deterministic causalism.

- Therefore, CATEGORICAL affirmations in our field of study are imprudent, improper and in any case contrary to the deontological and epistemological spirit which reigns in current GRAPHOLOGY. Such affirmations belong purely within the realm of speculation and are far removed from the facts offered by the correct practice of graphology.

- The undersigned International Graphological Institutions affirm via this MANIFESTO the need for a clear and emphatic distinction to be made between , the many methodologies whose fundamental goal is the study of handwriting and its correspondences with and relations to the writer's subjectivity and psycho-physiology, and, secondly,, those other marginal approaches, generically called RATIONAL GRAPHOLOGY or IDENGRAPHY, whose epistemological position is unacceptable from any point of view, both in terms of its categorical affirmations as well as the dangerous mystification implied for graphological analysis.

- The Graphotherapy proposed by the so-called RATIONAL GRAPHOLOGY or IDENGRAPHY is presented as an improvement on those graphological postulates unrelated to ITS SYSTEM, with affirmations that illegitimately broach the fields of medicine, oncology, metaphysics, etc., and is an exegesis of handwriting that, in our opinion, represents a historical regression which is incompatible with the legitimate requirements of the international graphological community; requirements which are directed towards the understanding of the relations between the plurality of expressive manifestations of individual graphology and the writer's subjectivity and, in any case, are always based on deliberation, objectivity, sound judgement and respect for the different methodologies used to gain a greater understanding of the relations between the psyche and handwriting.

- Therefore, via this MANIFESTO, the international graphological community, represented by the undersigned institutions, explicitly warns of the need to clearly and definitively differentiate between what are postulates, methodologies and applications of current GRAPHOLOGY and what are other approaches to Graphism which are unrelated to and incompatible with Graphology, such as the IDENGRAPHIC or GRAPHO-RATIONAL SYSTEM, and any philosophical or apologetic theory related to the occult, divination, quack medicine or fortune-telling.

This scientific method has been adopted by the Spanish school of graphology which was founded by Professor Augusto Vels, who is also the founder of the Spanish Association of Consultant Graphologists (“Agrupación de Grafoanalistas Consultivos de España” –“AGC de España”-). The method consists in an evaluation of graphic traits classified into aspects and sub-aspects; once the scoring of dominants and subdominants has been made, a profile is obtained of the predominant Hippocratic temperament (Periot), the characterological combination (Heymans-Le Senne), attitude towards life and psychic function (Jung).

Khōra helps us to understand psychophysical elements as expressed within spatial symbolism. When elaborating a personality profile, such elements are key in formulating graphonomic assessments of handwriting in order to provide insight into psychosomatic, volitional and moral characteristics.

Max Pulver’s work with spatial symbolism contributed greatly to psychoanalysis (especially to Jungian analysis) and opened up new worlds to graphologists. However long before that, Plato had described his spatial scheme in Timaeus, agreeing on many points with Pythagoras.

For Plato, space (khōra) is to be found at the meeting point between the chronological history of our world and our personal histories. It exists where the generation of the world and our own small time periods come together. Therefore, our own space converges with these two aspects and with others. The medium is the setting of time. Space is configured through the momentary and changeable crystallisation of historical events. Seen from this perspective, the medium’s relation to space is that of a fixing of generation.

Khōra’s structure is that of a cross, which could be defined in the language of the Italian school of graphology as the vertical axis (the path of will) and the horizontal axis (the path of intelligence). Khōra is the intersection of willpower and intellect; it is movement within space and time themselves, which characterise the very essence of personality (temperament, character and intelligence).

(Psychobiology and Temperament)

A graphological perspective shows us that the psychophysical level accompanied Hergé for quite some time, stimulating him in his need to continually outdo himself. He has a "self-improvement" script, despite the potential difficulties from which he suffers on a permanent basis, but which he is able to overcome thanks to inner strength (he channels handwriting energy via compensations, sublimations, a good basic rhythm, methodical inequalities and elements of fluidity or harmonised movement).

He is driven by objectives; he needs to feel participant in the act of creation, in a project. At times, he even needs to test himself, to see how he measures up and to show what he is worth. He feels the need to overcome his worries and his meticulousness, to go beyond those anxieties that could block him and make him question (or regret) his undertakings.

There might be inner battles waging due to his need to take risks and prove himself, what with a rather reserved attitude and a greater tendency towards creativity than towards social competitiveness.

He has a temperament which fosters receptiveness, even a creativity of discernment and taste; but that same temperament is also responsible for a kind of nervousness and concern about the image or opinion that others may have of him.

We define forensic handwriting analysis as the sum of graphological techniques employed to identify the author of handwriting.

Graphic features are a manifestation of energy, and as such they may be evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively, in terms of: intensity, the strength of the driving force (pressure); liveliness, the dynamism of that energy (speed); tone, the fluctuations in the course of life (direction); life expansion (dimension); order and control over energetic force (order); consistency and regularity (continuity), etc. Graphic projective tests allow us to look at that graphic X-ray of the human psyche which is writing, bringing to light these parameters (order, dimension, pressure, shape, speed, direction, slope and continuity), their variability and the unique characteristics known as type-gestures. Taken as a whole, they present us with something which is inherent and unique to the individual, allowing for identification that goes beyond the physiological perspective and takes in medicine, psychology, sociology, criminology and law.

Naturally, since the only goal of forensic handwriting analysis is to identify the author of the handwriting , not is correct to apply graphopsychology (personality portrait ), except in specific cases at the request of the judge.

In any case, the most constructive option is to sharpen one’s analysis via the use of the most advanced procedures in order to correctly identify the author of the graphism. This is what is important. Handwriting analysis should not become fossilised; like all techniques, it demands receptiveness, flexibility and constant development.

GRAPHOLOGY
Etymologically, graphology means the science of the study of graphisms (graphos: writing / logos: science). The various graphological specialisations arise as a result of the direction, or discipline, given to said study. In some of these specialisations (graphophysiology, medical graphology, forensic handwriting analysis, etc.) the neuter graphological method is used; that is to say, graphic aspects and sub-aspects are analysed using graphological terminology, without necessarily needing to make any psychological interpretation thereof.

Graphology is the study of graphisms, handwritten graphic symbols that represent words and ideas; this technical term graphism is to be understood in its widest sense as referring to any graphic expression, legible or illegible: punctuation signs, mathematical language, doodles, paraphs, etc.

From the graphological point of view, writing (a neuromuscular and psychic act) is understood to be a convergence of voluntary physical gestures that, via a semiconscious-learning process, become internalised, automatic and personalised due to a series of biological factors and to the sum of socio-cultural experiences.

The Transactional Graphoanalysis that we created with Mª Luz Puente is the technique that has offered us the greatest success in fields such as human resources. Murder of the psychologist Anna Permanyer:
Forced to sign to hand over her apartment

Judicial proceedings from Court No. 15/07, Barcelona Provincial Hearing on the offence of EXTORTION AND MURDER.

Oral trial held in Barcelona between February and March 2008. Room 1 of the Court in the Barcelona Palace of Justice.

Verdict of the Jury: By unanimous vote, Carmen Badía is declared guilty and proven to have obtained the signature of Anna Permanyer under force and duress. It also condemns her accomplice Juan Sesplugues.

Although there have been many cases, especially in Civil law, which recognise grapho-psycological results in holographic testimonials (doubt over the grantor’s capacity), incompatibility or problematic personalities in matrimonial cohabitation, and in considerations for the guardianship and custody of children in cases of separation and divorce etc. (see the four works by Francisco Viñals y Mariluz Puente), the case that we will discuss is a historical event within the world of Graphology. For the first time, a Court annulled a contract on considering as an unarguable fact that the signature of the owner was obtained by force and under duress, giving maximum demonstrative value to the graphological result presented and directed by Prof. Francisco Viñals, current chairman of the ADEG. Prof. Viñals demonstrated the state of distress of the signatory, which contrasted extraordinarily with the usual writing and signatures of the victim Anna Permanyer, with a predominate mood and characterological combination of SL/PN(AT) calculated at the percentile of the graphoanalysis of Vels and Viñals & Puente. The chronological study offered a stable evolutionary curve with the predominance of regularity, self-control, constancy, empathy, adaptation, and sociability typical of a cylindrical, firm-soft, curvilinear and constant writing which surprisingly contrasted with the constrictive and inhibited imbalance of the signatures in question (some placed in areas which did not correspond and missing the signatures from the last three pages). In addition, strange elements appeared in some of the signatures in question, especially brusque changes or turns that changed the direction with angles, stop pressure and other alterations of an outside force which exerted not only psychic but also physical pressure on the victim in a coercive manner.
Prompted by this case, which places European Graphoanalysis (Vels and Viñals & Puente) in the highest social consideration, Professor Mariluz Puente has carried out a criminalistic account with a perfect sequential exposition for criminalistics and forensic graphologists.

DISAPPEARANCE AND DEATH OF ANNA PERMANYER

Anna Permanyer, aged 53, married with three children, psychologist like her husband and resident in Barcelona, disappeared on the afternoon of the 27th September 2004. She was last seen by the doorman of the Atalaya building in Barcelona, who saw her enter but did not see her leave. The three children and husband of Anna Permanyer ruled out from the very outset a voluntary departure or one due to psychological problems, since she was extremely attached to her family and at the same time had many friendships. She was held in high esteem in the neighbourhood, as was demonstrated by the more than two thousand people who protested in her name. On the 10th October, she was found dead in a wooded lay-by in Sitges, behind the restaurant Les Bodegues Güell. Some workers called the Guardia Civil, and despite being found in a state of advanced decomposition, they were able to determine that she had suffered traumatisms due to violence.

BODY AUTOPSY

The corpse showed injuries as a result of blows with a heavy and rounded object. The forensic doctors indicated that at least six blows to the face and head of the victim had been identified, although these blows were not the actual cause of death, rather respiratory failure that was caused by suffocation using plastic.

Regarding the hour of death, the forensics came to the conclusion from the status of digestion traced in the autopsy that the victim died approximately three hours after her last meal. Due to the decomposition of the corpse which had occurred during her disappearance, they determined that the psychologist Anna Permanyer had died on the same afternoon that she disappeared, soon after taking the lift in the Atalaya building where she had gone to see her tenant, Carmen B.

MOTIVE FOR THE CRIME

The motive for the crime is taken to be in this case the acquisition by Carmen B. of an apartment, store room and parking space in the Atalaya building for a price of almost 600,000 euros, since she presented an earnest money contract for an amount greater than 400,000 euros – something rather surprising to the Chief of Police who carried out the investigation, since it is not usual that such a high amount is given as down payment. In addition, the fact that not all the pages were signed, those in which the owner Anna Permanyer appeared were odd and some places she appeared as the buyer rather than the seller, motivated him to continue this line of investigation to verify the facts and the responsibility of the accused in this crime.

RECORD OF THE MAIN ACCUSED, CARMEN B. AND HER ALLEGED ACCOMPLICES

The police operation detained Carmen B.L. as head of the operation and her friends Joan S.B., 79 years of age and resident of Lleida, and Anabel T.P., 42 years of age and resident of Fraga (Huesca) as accomplices.

Carmen B. already had various police records; for example, in 1997 she set fire to her house in Lleida to claim the insurance; she was also jailed for nine months under the pretexts of murdering her second husband, whose family also received various anonymous letters after his death. On the 15th October 2004, having recently discovered the body of the psychologist Anna Permanyer, before the scientific police were able to access the residence on floor 11 of the Atalaya building where the accused had first lived, a fire broke out in precisely this apartment, empty at the time, which is where the police suspect the murder took place. Also, a protected witness discounted the alibi given by Carmen B.

The accomplice Joan S. was incriminated by the hairs found on Anna Permanyer’s body and the iron bar or “crowbar” with the victim’s hair found by the police in his car which coincides with the heavy objected used to strike Anna Permanyer.

In the Anna Permanyer murder case, circumstances pointed directly to the accused, in such a way that the Tenth section of the Barcelona Criminal Court in December 2005 denied the release of the three accused, since the incriminating evidence was “many” and “very varied”. At the same time, it considered that there was an "extremely high" risk of flight or that the accused may attempt to "hide evidence or destroy evidence that had already been found".

In the days following her disappearance, some opportunists extorted the family of Anna Permanyer simulating a kidnapping and demanding a sum of money or otherwise, they would cut her up. It turned out to have had nothing to do with the case, since it was traced to two Paraguayan individuals, Wilson W.B. and G.A.J, who were detained on the same day that the body was found when they went to collect the ransom outside a nightclub in Molins de Rei that they themselves had indicated as a meeting point for a member of the family of the psychologist to bring the money.

RUSES OF THE ACCUSED CARMEN B.L.

In an attempt to divert attention, Carmen B. declared that some strangers had kidnapped her in the shopping centre “L’Illa” in Barcelona and that later they left her in Collserola Park. Since she was followed at all times by two police inspectors, they denied that there had been such a kidnapping, rather that the accused went to Collserola and she had met her friend the accused Juan S. there.

STRUCTURAL FIRE EXPERT’S REPORT

The criminalistic experts of the Fire Force conclusively confirmed in a report that the fire which took place on floor 11 of the Atalaya building (in which Carmen B. had previously lived before moving to the apartment on floor 18 owned by the family of the psychologist Anna Permanyer) had been provoked.

The expert’s report indicated that the fire started in two different locations in the apartment and that both focal points were far apart, confirming that the fire was intentionally started.

BIOLOGIST EXPERT’S REPORT

DNA of the hairs found on the body

Having compared the DNA with saliva taken from the suspect, specialist biologists of the Provincial Scientific Police Brigade of Police Headquarters of Catalonia, assured that the hair found on Anna Permanyer’s body belonged in all probability to the accused Joan S.B.

FORENSIC HANDWRITING AND GRAPHOLOGICAL EXPERT’S REPORT

First forensic handwriting-graphological expert’s report (identification, personality and emotional state)

-The signatures on the earnest money contract were essentially that of psychologist Anna Permanyer, with doubts regarding some strange elements in the signatures

The Police and other experts declared that most of the signatures on the earnest money contract belonged to psychologist Anna Permanyer; even though specialists from the National Police Force declared that they could not assure that some of the signatures were hers since the signatures were either too simplified or in some parts, incorporated strange elements which were not habitual of the psychologist’s writing. Prof. F. Viñals and Prof. J. Vives confirmed that the author was the victim, but they demonstrated using overhead projectors in the court that the alterations observed demonstrated that the signatures had been written in an unusual state of stress.

Despite attempts made by the accused Carmen B.’s defence to convince the court that the alterations shown in the signatures of the psychologist Anna Permanyer were typical of her writing, Prof. Francisco Viñals Carrera demonstrated that this was not the case. Mrs. Anna Permanyer always signed carefully in official and company documents, as with her usual writing. Applying the protocols of European Graphoanalysis, a mood and characterological combination indicated that she was a self-controlled person, showing easy social adaptation and integration, empathy, sociable, conciliating etc. This contrasted with the abnormal, uncompensated emotionality, evasiveness and distressed findings shown in the signatures in the earnest money contract that could not be found in any official or company document provided. For this reason, the only explanation for the grapho-writing alterations already studied by classic criminalists is due to duress or pressure on the victim, since the graphopsycological reflection in this case was of “tormented” writing (typical of someone fearing for their life) and in some cases, presented not only signs of vital distress but certain changing strokes due to a "brusque blow" or elements foreign to her signature that the aforementioned director in this speciality in UAB explained as being moments of extreme stress in which physical force was applied to make her to write.

The argument was given in an exhaustive and convincing manner, and at no time did it contradict the evidence provided by specialists of the National Police Force which also left this possibility on declaring that the signatures showed an abnormal state of alteration. The defence experts for the accused Carmen B. argued that in the documents examined from Mrs. Anna Permanyer there were also alterations, however it turned out that said alterations appeared in agendas or in notes on a Telefónica envelope. Prof. Francisco Viñals disputed the arguments by saying that such notes were perfectly valid for obtaining intrinsic or gesture-type details from the writing, however in order to identify the author, they must be applied with caution in grapho-psychological interpretation since a difference between the quality and circumstances of the samples used to extract mood and characterological predominance is made in the European Graphoanalysis protocol. He insisted that we all may write precipitately when making notes or adding a personal note when beside the telephone or writing something down in a hurry etc. or we may even start to scrawl or trace, something which should not interfere in the taking of valid parameters since they are typical of the standardised writing of a person (for this reason, a maximum amount of graphic material must be collected and if possible, in chronological order), differentiating it from circumstantial notes to written pages.

Second forensic handwriting expert’s report (Anonymous)

-Coincidence in the writing of the principle accused Carmen B.L. with the anonymous notes sent to the family of Anna Permanyer

More than forty graphic coincidences came to light in the reports from Prof. Toledano and Prof. Fernandez of the National Police Force and from Prof. Viñals and Prof. Vives also prosecution and individual charge experts. In this case, the defence of the accused Carmen B.L. tried to distort said correspondences, as its evidence (taking into account that the note was anonymous where it is usual for it to be disguised) was determining. The appearance of each one of the intrinsic gestures observed in the journals of the accused overcame any possibility of doubt, showing unquestionable gesture-types.

PSYCHIATRIC EXPERT’S REPORT

Despite the mocking attitude of the accused Carmen B. who jeered the investigators and smiled at the cameras when being transferred to the Court, the experts have confirmed that both Carmen B. and the other two accused do not suffer any mental disorder and were fully conscious of their actions.

The writing of the main accused Carmen B. already showed graphical characteristics that coincided with some traits of the personality outlined by the experts, for example the anti-social tendency (immature letters, with graphic interversion or insertion of upper-case letters instead of lower-case, changes in style, irregular and displaced pressure, crosses on the “t” in ascending diagonal direction). In relation to the possible tendency towards this type of act, when describing the writing of the anonymous notes and comparing it to that of the accused, Dr. Francisco Viñals highlighted the uneven pressure and accelerated calibre which he observed in both the questionable samples and the other samples, especially in “hidden” strokes (“S” was taken towards the lower zone with sharpness arising from a noted and uncompensated calibre) similar to “sickles” or “scythes”. Also, a peculiar gesture-type shown in the dots of the “i.i” as a dash (horizontal straight traces in the air, without connection) illustrate exhaustive details.

CONCLUSIONS OF THE TRIAL

The Prosecution increases the sentence to 30 years, as the individual charge

After the conviction of the facts, the Prosecution increased the sentence request to 25 years of prison for Carmen B.L., Anabel T. and Joan S. for the extortion and murder of Barcelona psychologist Anna Permanyer on the 27th September 2004.

The Prosecution maintained that, together with the individual charge, the three accused, in alliance in the action, as well as in the result of obtaining an immediate equity benefit, exercised violence and intimidation on the victim Anna Permanyer in order for her to sign against her will an earnest money contract for the apartment that was property of the psychologist.

In the contract, in which the daughter of Carmen B. appeared as the beneficiary, it indicated that the defendant had paid 429,000 euros as a down payment that Anna Permanyer agreed to return in the case of non-compliance of the contract.

The defendants are considered as being responsible for the blows to the head and neck that the psychologist Anna Permanyer received. Similarly, having obtained her signature by force after stunning her with blows, they suffocated her with plastic bags leading to her death; subsequently they wrapped up the body and abandoned it in Sitges.

The Jury condemns Carmen B. and her accomplice Joan S.

On the 12th March 2008, the Jury gave a verdict of guilty to Carmen Badía and Joan Sesplugues for the murder of the psychologist ANNA PERMANYER, declaring as proven that on the afternoon of the 27th September 2004, Carmen B. and Joan S. forced "with violence or intimidation" Anna Permanyer to sign a earnest money contract in which she sold her apartment in the Atalaya building, together with a storage space and garage.

Friztl Case

Elisabeth Fritzl, 42-year-old. Austrian woman, she had been sexually abused and imprisoned by her father, Josef Fritzl. He kept her for 24 years in a small cellar. There Elisabeth gave birth to a total of seven children, all fathered by Josef Fritzl.

Although this piece of writing is previous to the imprisonment, it fits with the typology of the SC "Submissive Child " of the Transactional Analysis, and, in spite of the fact that there are some parameters of the RC "Rebellious Child ", for the distaste or sexual rejection that one detects, and it is logical if she had already been attacked by her father, however the parameters are minimal as to make herself rebel in a direct way, in any case these only enhance the neutral part of the AC “Adapted Child” as a base of both derived typologies, but always outstanding (up to a 60%) the “Submissive Child”, that would have probably developed as the only way out to her instinct of self-preservation, because it is evident the reflection of phobias (torsions of the upper geotropic axes) and handwriting alterations of inhibitory tendency which are characteristics of the insecurity and the constant fear.

What is Graphopsychology?

Graphopsychology or Psychological Analysis of Handwriting consists in the study and practice of advanced graphological techniques which offer a scientific interpretation of an individual’s personality based on handwriting and, in part, on doodles and drawings. Like psychiatry and dualistic psychologies, it looks at graphic-motor representations (writing) of mental activity as indicators of psychological states, as opposed to materialistic psychology which rejects the idea of mind.

The term graphopsychology was coined by the Italian graphologist Marco Marchesan and it is the term that has gained the greatest acceptance among professionals, although there are also other names used to refer to the discipline, such as psychographology, coined by Father Girolamo Moretti, and psychology of writing, by Wilhem Preyer, Robert Saudek and Jean Charles Gille. The layman tends to equate graphopsychology with graphology, believing them to be synonymous; this confusion is easy to understand if we consult the dictionary of the Real Academia Española, which defines graphology as “the science or art of ascertaining someone’s character through graphisms” (ciencia o arte de averiguar el carácter a través del grafismo). There is, in any case, a close relation between the two; graphopsychology is a specialisation within the field of graphology – not the only one, but certainly the most well known.

Graphopsychology, used as a projective technique, fits within the general framework of psychiatry as a way of diagnosing a patient’s state of mind. It is considered one more personality assessment tool within a scientific protocol which psychiatrists follow exactly, step by step, called the exploration of psychological or psychopathological symptoms.

Exploration of psychological or psychopathological symptoms is carried out by interviewing the patient as well as their family members, friends and colleagues; then there are “diagnostic” interviews, various medical tests, batteries of tests, and even the qualitative analysis of writing, all of which offer data and direct information concerning the person’s state or mental processes. Most of this method can be applied to criminology, especially in interviewing suspects.

What is graphology?

Etymologically, graphology means the science of the study of graphisms (graphos: writing / logos: science). The various graphological specialisations arise as a result of the direction, or discipline, given to said study. In some of these specialisations (graphophysiology, medical graphology, forensic handwriting analysis, etc.) the neuter graphological method is used; that is to say, graphic aspects and sub-aspects are analysed using graphological terminology, without necessarily needing to make any psychological interpretation thereof.

Graphology is the study of graphisms, handwritten graphic symbols that represent words and ideas; this technical term graphism is to be understood in its widest sense as referring to any graphic expression, legible or illegible: punctuation signs, mathematical language, doodles, paraphs, etc.

From the graphological point of view, writing (a neuromuscular and psychic act) is understood to be a convergence of voluntary physical gestures that, via a semiconscious-learning process, become internalised, automatic and personalised due to a series of biological factors and to the sum of socio-cultural experiences.

Anthropologist, academic director of the Instituto de Ciencias del Grafismo and 1st vice-president since 2005 of the Agrupación de Grafoanalistas Consultivos de España, having extensively collaborated with the association for many years as technical advisor to the board of directors and as representative of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Together with Professor F. Viñals, she has been the director since 2000 of the Universitat de Barcelona’s Master's Degree in Graphistics, Graphopathology and Forensic Graphology, the Postgraduate Degree in Psychological Analysis of Handwriting, Graphoanalysis, Graphopathology and Graphic Projective Tests, the Master’s Degree in Document Examination and Judicial Analysis of Patents and Brands, the Postgraduate Degree in Judicial Handwriting Analysis, Graphistics, Document Examination and Forensic Sociolinguistics, as well as the Postgraduate Degree in Judicial Analysis of Intellectual and Industrial Property. She is also a professor of Graphoanalysis and scientific techniques applied to criminal investigation in the degrees for Criminology, private detectives and security, teaching various classes within the Escuela de Prevención y Seguridad Integral at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She has also written on other subjects such as her work L’Escultor Carrera, published independently together with Francisco Viñals, as well as articles and lectures as professor attached to the Ilustre Colegio Oficial de Doctores y Licenciados en Filosofía, Letras y Ciencias de Cataluña.

Not only has Professor Mariluz Puente been highly praised in the press, she has also received numerous honours, having recently been decorated with the Medalla al Mérito Criminológico as well as being named honorary member of the Instituto de Investigaciones en Psicología de la Escritura de la Argentina. She has also written the introduction to books written by members of her team of collaborators such as Professor Manuel J. Moreno or Professor Francisco Flores.

Due to her previous experience as a professor of journalism at the University of Barcelona and publisher of various media, she was asked to direct the AGC’s bulletin which she significantly improved, turning it into the magazine “Grafoanálisis”, now a yearbook of the AGC of Spain which is published with the collaboration of the Instituto de Ciencias del Grafismo, of which she is also member of the managerial team. Francisco Viñals Carrera is the director of the Instituto de Ciencias del Grafismo as well as the president of the Agrupación de Grafoanalistas Consultivos de España since the year 2000, having previously been vice-president as well as holding other positions since becoming a member of the constituent board.

Professor Viñals is the creator of Graphoanalysis applied to Transactional Analysis, a thesis which he developed in 1983 after extensive training in psychoanalysis and which he also set out in the Escuela de Alta Dirección y Administración de Empresas de Barcelona, which finally led to his currently computerised system of Transactional Graphoanalysis as well as the work he developed together with Professor Mariluz Puente: Psychodiagnostic Assessment via Handwriting: Transactional Graphoanalysis. This work is part of the basic bibliography of the Master's Degree in Graphistics, Graphopathology and Forensic Graphology and of the Postgraduate Degree in Psychological Analysis of Handwriting, Graphoanalysis, Graphopathology and Graphic Projective Tests (which he also directs together with the aforementioned co-author at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since the year 2000) as well as in the Postgraduate Degree in Judicial Handwriting Analysis (currently included within the Master’s Degree in Document Examination and Judicial Analysis of Patents and Brands) which they have also directed since the year 1996. Previously he was technical director at the Instituto de Criminología of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, local section within the Universidad de Córdoba. Professor Viñals is also President of the Asociación Profesional de Peritos Calígrafos de Cataluña and honorary president of the Asociación Profesional de Titulados Universitarios en Pericia Caligráfica Judicial, honorary member of the Asociación Colegial de Peritos Calígrafos de Asturias and honorary member of the Instituto de Investigaciones en Psicología de la Escritura de la Argentina, among other distinguished organisations. He has obtained some of the greatest successes that can be attributed to Handwriting Analysis, Document Examination and Graphology in Spain, having made masterly contributions in matters which led to judicial handwriting analysis eventually obtaining a decisive legal status and becoming further developed. In fact, the term “Judicial Handwriting Analysis” (pericia caligráfica judicial) was coined by Francisco Viñals and Mariluz Puente and was used in the title of their second book, Judicial Handwriting Analysis: Practice, Examples and Models, a work which is essential in university programs that teach this speciality. Within the discipline he is recognised as having proved that expertise in handwriting analysis is a branch of Graphology, which was not at all easy to do; but the proof of his triumph can be seen in the fact that his detractors themselves currently use his system, terms, designations and of course, now defend graphological techniques as a way of guaranteeing the credibility of their reports.

One of the other great graphological contributions of the distinguished graphologist, psychoanalyst and jurist Mr Francisco Viñals Carrera was the creation of the Graphological Lie Detector, developed in his works, especially in Análisis de Escritos y Documentos en los Servicios Secretos (Analysis of Writings and Documents in the Secret Services), which was the successful result of his research as the first graphoanalyst of the General Staff of the Army with the help of the Office and Group Operations of the Department of Intelligence, for which (as well as other significant contributions) he was decorated with the First-Class Cross medal, awarded by the Ministry of Defence representing H.M. the King of Spain Don Juan Carlos I, with the protocol used for high-ranking officers, as well as other honours and mentions by military and civil orders that he has received.

Professor Viñals is recognised by some of the highest institutions in Spain as a leading graphologist, as was pointed out by the news director of Antena 3 news on the 30 August 2002 when a report about him referred to him as the “most important graphologist nowadays” (the exact words of Mr Matías Prats when introducing the news bulletin). Likewise, the newspaper La Vanguardia in its edition from Sunday, 9 May 2004 dedicated two full-colour pages upon the publication of Análisis de Escritos y Documentos en los Servicios Secretos. He has been chosen to be included among the “Important Catalans” and is included in volume XIII of the Contemporary History of Catalonia. He has also made significant contributions as a jurist, being a professor of the World Jurist Association and having successfully contributed to various alternative draft bills and bye-laws as well as to reports on ethics and on Criminalistics as professor and director of this speciality at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He is also a noteworthy member of the International Police Association as well as professor at the Escuela de Policía de Cataluña and member of various control and follow-up commissions related to university training and professional quality control. He is a sponsor of research towards the development of human beings and justice, thus continuing with the work begun by his maternal grandfather Juan Carrera Dellunder, patron of the basilica of Santa Maria del Collell in Girona.

The psychological analysis of handwriting, or graphoanalysis, consists in the study and practice of advanced graphological techniques which offer a scientific interpretation of an individual’s personality based on handwriting and, in part, on doodles and drawings. Through a graphoanalytical personality diagnosis, one can obtain the percentile of the predominant temperament as well as character and psychoanalytical combinations, making it possible to offer a complete report on the psychosomatic, volitional, moral, intellectual and mental characteristics of the piece of writing being examined.

Despite the fact that scientific graphology has a long, valid tradition in Europe (mainly in German, Swiss and Italian universities), there are few specialists in the field, for which reason graphology does not exist in Spain as its own degree course. However, thanks to the surprisingly positive results that have been verified by court institutions and the business world, there are more and more university graduates and professionals from interdisciplinary fields who are interested in graphoanalysis as an effective analytical tool, backed up since its beginnings by clinical methodology supported by the medical field.

This unique, original programme (part of the third cycle of studies at the UAB) is meant for anyone working in human relations who would like to specialise in the aforementioned graphoanalytical techniques as a practical tool for diagnosing character and personality, with various applications: education (developmental age), work (staff hiring and orientation) and pathology and criminology (including police and court work: disappearances, violence and physical abuse, sexual abuse, harassment, suicide, etc.).

Professor Francisco Viñals Carrera is member of the World Jurist Association and has been decorated by the Ministry of Defence. In 1993, he set up the specialisation in Forensic Handwriting Analysis at the Instituto de Criminología y Cátedra de Derecho Penal at the Universidad Complutense, local section at Cordoba. This programme of studies was brought to the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 1996, to the Escuela de Práctica Jurídica (School of Legal Practice) within the Escuela de Doctorado y Formación Continuada (School of Doctorate Studies and Continuing Education), now called the Graduate School. He is member of the International Police Association and professor at the Escola de Policia de Catalunya (Catalan Police School) and at the EPSI-UAB. He has collaborated on various alternative draft bills and works as a consultant for high international authorities in the capacity of institutional commissioner for training in criminalistics and graphological sciences. In 2003, he was chosen for “Personatges de Catalunya” (Important Catalans), and included in volume XIII of the Història Contemporània de Catalunya due to the contributions his work has made to society.

Professor María Luz Puente Balsells is an anthropologist, criminalist and scientific investigator. She specialised in forensic research at the Escuela de Medicina Legal (School of Forensic Medicine) of the Universidad Complutense, in psychological analysis of handwriting at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, and in intelligence services at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). She is coordinating professor of the studies programmes in Forensic Handwriting Analysis and in Criminalistics, Information Analysis and Advanced Forensic-Science Techniques at the Graduate School of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). She is professor of scientific techniques applied to criminal investigation at the Escola de Prevenció i de Seguretat Integral (School of Accident Prevention and Integrated Safety) at the UAB. She is also a member of the managing board of the Instituto de Ciencias del Grafismo, director of the Seminario de Inteligencia Civil y Militar (Seminar on Civil and Military Intelligence – ADPCI) and vice-president of the Spanish Association of Consultant Graphologists. Previously she worked as a writer for various media, taught information studies, and also worked as a professor attached to the Col·legi Oficial de Doctores y Llicenciats en Filosofia, Lletres i Ciències de Catalunya (Catalan Association of Doctors and Undergraduates in Philosophy, Arts and Sciences).

Professor Josep Llobet Aguado is a jurist, judge pro tempore at the Audiencia Provincial (provincial criminal court) of Barcelona, and professor of Civil Law working at the Department of Private Law at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He directs doctorate courses at the university and has represented the UAB in training judges in other countries

Lecturers: The team of teachers on this programme, apart from Prof. Francisco Viñals and Prof. María Luz Puente who will teach and supervise most of the practical classes, include distinguished professors such as Josep Maria Tous and Santiago Estaún; important doctors and psychiatrists who are also graphoanalysts, such as Prof. Buenaventura Deusedes and Prof. Antonio Ruiz de Azúa; exceptional psychologists who are also graphoanalysts, such as Prof. Lynn Pérez-Calvo and Prof. Teresa Pont; as well as judges and experts in graphology from the scientific police.
There will be many visiting professors – representatives from the most prestigious graphology institutions in Spain – such as María Dolores Mora, Jordi Morera, Manuel J. Moreno, and F. Flores; important professionals from abroad are expected to participate as well; there will be additional support and special contributions made by honorary professors such as Joseph Seiler, Silvio Lena, Pacífico Cristofanelli, A. Gauthier and Pedro-José Foglia.

Target students: Psychiatrists, doctors, anthropologists, psychotherapists, social workers, certified nurses, criminologists, qualified detectives, managers or specialists in human resources, teachers, educators, certified judicial expert analysts, specialists and leaders working in public and private safety. An undergraduate degree (licenciatura or diplomatura) is a prerequisite; persons with the appropriate professional background or with a foreign degree may however be allowed to participate at the programme directors’ discretion; in those cases, upon successful completion of the programme they will be given a certificate stating that they followed the postgraduate-degree programme, noting the classes, class hours and credits.

Objectives of the programme: Students will learn to analyse writing as well as other tests and graphic expressions, using specific and systematic methodologies for gaining a deeper understanding of the individual in terms of personality, development, relationships, pathologies and criminology. For each case, students will be provided with effective tools for understanding individuals through the parameters of graphic expression. The techniques used are the result of the coming together of validated methods employed in the various European schools (French, German, Swiss and Italian) with special emphasis on the graphoanalytical techniques derived from the Spanish school founded by Augusto Vels and currently under development by Professor Viñals and Professor Puente.
The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona’s goal is to offer an intense education with specialist knowledge of the subject matter, such that it may be applied practically.

Total hours: 300 (including practice time and tutorials), equivalent to 30 ECTS

Schedule: Fridays, 5pm to 9pm (January 2008 and ends October 2008, with breaks at Easter and summer). Students must attend all classes, but a special group requiring only part-time attendance might be set up for students living outside of Catalonia with experience in the profession, if UAB has tutors available.

Rights: status of a student in the third cycle of studies at the UAB with student card and access to libraries.

Teaching materials: students will be given material throughout the course including notes, study samples, milimetric templates, CDs, articles, news items, database information and specialist reading lists.

Tutorials: includes face-to-face as well as virtual supporting tutorials.

Assessment: Ongoing (students will each have to prepare as many exercises and reports as they are given individually or in work groups, until reaching a level high enough to merit a passing grade).

DEGREE/DIPLOMA IN PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF HANDWRITING

Once the student has passed the course, they will be given the following credentials: an official academic document from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona stating that the student has passed the programme in PSYCHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF HANDWRITING, GRAPHOANALYSIS, GRAPHOPATHOLOGY AND GRAPHIC PROJECTIVE TESTS from the Graduate School, with the classes, hours and credits detailed. The student may request a diploma for the postgraduate degree from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona; in the case of those students who were accepted into the programme by the directors thanks to their professional career or due to having a foreign degree that has not been officially recognised by the Spanish government, a certification will be given of having followed the postgraduate degree studies.

These studies are sufficient for entering the Spanish Association of Consultant Graphologists; members of the association are given certification and professional proof of accreditation.
